Definition

Proper Noun: - Ngô Nhân Tịnh ( - 1816): A scholar and poet of the Gia Long era in Vietnamese history. His courtesy name was Nhữ Sơn. His ancestral grandfather was from Guangdong, China, who migrated and settled in Gia Định. He was a student of the scholar Trường Toản. Along with Trịnh Hoài Đức and Quang Định, he was celebrated by contemporaries as one of the three great poets of the ancient Gia Định region (Gia Định Tam Gia) within the Bình Dương poetry society.

Historical Role and Career
  • Official and Diplomat: He served Nguyễn Ánh (the future Emperor Gia Long) during the latter's time in Gia Định, holding the position of Thị độc in the Hàn Lâm Academy. In 1798, he served as Hữu tham tri of the Ministry of War and was sent as an envoy to the Qing Dynasty in China to survey the political situation. After Nguyễn Ánh ascended the throne as Emperor Gia Long in 1802, he served as Giáp phó sứ, accompanying Trịnh Hoài Đức and Hoàng Ngọc Uẩn on a second mission to the Qing court. In 1807, he acted as Chánh sứ (chief envoy) with deputy envoy Trần Công Đàn to Cambodia (Chân Lạp) to confer the royal seal and appoint Nặc Ông Chân as king. In 1811, he served as Hiệp trấn (Deputy Governor) of Nghệ An province. The following year (1812), he was assigned to Gia Định as Hiệp tổng trấn (Deputy General Governor) assisting General Governor Văn Duyệt. Later, he was bestowed the titles Kim Tử vinh lộc đại phu, Thượng Khanh, and the noble rank Tịnh Viễn Hầu (Marquis Tịnh Viễn). He died in 1816 and was given the posthumous name Trác Gian.
